When we talk of a person, we tend to describe her in terms of some qualities or characterizes. The terms used are such as ‘shy type’, ‘honest’, ‘dominant’, ‘submissive’, ‘aggressive’, ‘soft’, ‘humorous’, ‘morose’, ‘selfish’, ‘kind and understanding type’, ‘strict disciplinarian’, ‘sociable’ and so on. Physical appearance may be one of the factors to create the first impressions to form an opinion about a person. But the names earned by the external appearance of a person such as, “beautiful or ugly”, “tall or short”, fat or lean cannot help to define a personality. Personality involves all aspects of human behavior and a study of personality is based on a study of the mind.
“Personality is defined as the whole individual, consisting of the “overall pattern or integration”, of his or her structures, modes of behavior, interests, attitudes, intellectual abilities, aptitudes and many other distinguishable characteristics. According to psychologists, “Personality is a equality which is acquired by an individual in object-oriented activity and communication characterizing his or her involvement in social relations. Personality is developed in the process of social practice. Being active, and with a knowledge of the surroundings, environment and the society, the person finds a unity with her own emotional experience. The term “Personality” refers to the integrated person of an individual, her consistent behaviour and also her special characteristic quality. The components in dissecting a personality by a psychologist are called “the personality traits”.
